Okay, this may be a controversial post but it's something that's really been bothering me.
And by "really bothering", I mean it worries me A LOT and is very concerning.
The alcohol usage in Avon Lake is ridiculous.
Honestly, although maybe over the whole country rates are dropping,it's not in our quaint little town.
Maybe it's because I'm an athlete, but seriously, I do not understand why you would do that to your body.
Why would you potentially lower your life expectancy and allow yourself to be susceptible to a major addiction?
I chatted with one of the freshmen about this problem and she told me that in her grade, she knew people who started smoking in third grade, and started drinking in fifth grade.
WOW.
In fifth grade I started drinking pop... (Haha not really, this is just to emphasize my point.)
I'm beginning to feel like I'd rather live in the city where my family is struggling to find food, than these rich suburbs where its "normal" to get trashed everyday.
And the most despicable part of this growing problem is that PARENTS permit their kids to throw parties where the purpose is to get drunk.
I think a part of this problem is all the teenage parents who don't care about their kid's well being, which is devastingly awful. But for responsible parents, how can you raise your kids this way?
And I know students who parents encourage them to drink. WHAT.
Yes, I sound like a mom. And yes, I am a total conservative.
And because of those two facts, I'm worried as hell about our future generations.
So feel free to judge me to the bone, but I know where I stand and what my values are.
And I'm not accusing any particular group. Not specifically the freshmen or seniors or cheerleaders or bandos, not specifically any club or sport athletes in particular. In any variety of club or sport or grade it is easy to point out who's doing what on the weekends.
I'm just stating I'm worried. And it's true.
I'm worried for the kids who drink until alcohol poisoning hits, and I'm worried for the parents who don't even realize it.
But I don't know the solution to this problem, so just be aware.
Substance abuse in the city is probably worse, not to be a bummer. It is a valid concern though. When parents become concerned about making their kid popular, big problems ensue.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry Katie your not the only one concerned with this. I have had all of the same thoughts...especially when some of your friends call you because they need help after one of their "amzing" parties. I honestly don't understand any of it.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with you as well Katie. I just don't understand the concept of drinking for any age. I mean alcohol is used to clean hospitals, why the h*ll would you put it in your body?
ReplyDeleteI agree completely.. alcohol abuse is a big issue and it's just getting bigger. And it can ruin a lot of friendships unfortunately.
ReplyDeletepeople need to stop dinking and be like the kids in the olden days when they just skipped gayley in the meadows.
ReplyDeletenobody wants to end up like members of metallica drinking heavily for twenty years before finally realizing alcohol is avoidable. beer is the cheapest version of alcohol which is why there are so many beer commercials on TV (and why it's a billion dollar a year product).
ReplyDeleteAgree causes a lot of problems not just health wise.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there is too much drnking in our generation.
